pour réussir, il faut être sur ses gardes

Intervention carried out on 20 July 2019 at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, France

"Pour réussir, il faut être sur ses gardes" (To succeed, you have to be on your guard) is an intervention conceived by Gilbert Coqalane, and performed in duo with him on 20 July 2019 in the context of the exhibition "There were two young men" by artists Gilbert & Georges at the Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris, France), but without prior permission from this institution.

Gilbert Coqalane:

« This intervention takes shape through a static body expression, in a standing position, without words, without emotion, in the centre of an exhibition room, and which has as a consequence to confront the crowd, the tourists, the security agents by hindering the good functioning of this place. The unfolding and the end of the offensive is not decided by the artists but only by an undetermined external intervention. By imposing himself physically and peacefully, the artist proposes an objective state of the profession of artist and security guard, with several possible readings, but also a questioning of the limits and rules of a museum or an exhibition apparatus: Can one remain motionless and silent in a museum that exhibits artists who are at the origin of this concept of living sculptures? Can one remain motionless and silent in a museum that asks its employees (security guards) to use these same professional practices?

The intervention is performed by Gilbert Coqalane and Djan Silveberg, both dressed in the same outfits as the security guards of the Louis Vuitton Foundation (black suit, white shirt, red tie, silver buckle belt), important protagonists in the life of museums but largely forgotten. Through its aestheticism and absurdity, it is a tribute to the work of Gilbert and Georges, in particular a reminder of their "Living Sculptures". »
